The School of Physics invites expressions of interest from enthusiastic, suitably qualified people to work as
•    Casual Laboratory Demonstrators for first year and higher year teaching laboratories
•    Casual Teaching Assistants for the online courses PHYS1110, PHYS1160, GENS4015, and in the first year study area.
•    Teaching Assistants for first year problem solving workshops
Specific applicant criteria, selection process, and how to apply for different positions are set below.


Position (1)
Casual Laboratory Demonstrators for First Year Teaching Laboratory


Applicants must have:
•    Some practical experience in areas relevant to First Year Physics;
•    Completed at least two years of a Science or Engineering degree;
•    Preference will be given to applicants currently undertaking an Honours or PhD in Physics in Term 1, 2019 at UNSW Sydney.

Hours: Up to 10 hours per week from 9:00 am -7:00 pm Mon-Friday, Weeks 2-10 in Term 1, 2019. First Year labs start in Week 2 of Term 1 on 25 February 2019.

Selection for new candidates:
•    If your qualifications are suitable you will be invited to attend a 30 minutes test and interview between 23 to 25 January 2019. The test will cover simple first year physics principles.
•    If you are selected, you will need to attend Induction & Training Workshop for Laboratory Demonstrators. It will be held on Wednesday 30 January 2019, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm in the First Year Teaching Laboratory.


Position (2)
Casual Laboratory Demonstrators for Higher Year Teaching Laboratory


Applicants must have:
•    Some practical experience in areas relevant to Higher Year Physics;
•    Science or Engineering degree;
•    Preference will be given to applicants currently undertaking an Honours or PhD in Physics in Term 1, 2019 at UNSW Sydney.

Hours: 3-4 hours per week from 9:00 am -7:00 pm Mon-Friday, Weeks 1-10 in Term 1, 2019. Higher Year labs start in Week 1 of Term 1 on 18 February 2019.

Position (3)
Casual Teaching Assistants for the online courses PHYS1110, PHYS1160 and GENS4015


Applicants must have:
•    Knowledge of Physics relevant to PHYS1110, PHYS1160 and GENS4015 courses
•    Science or Engineering degree;
•    Preference will be given to applicants currently undertaking an Honours or PhD in Physics in Term 1, 2019 at UNSW Sydney.

Hours: Up to (TBA) hours per session for PHYS1110 and PHYS1160 and GENS4015, Weeks 1-10 in Term 1, 2019.

Position (4)
Casual Teaching Assistants for the First Year Study Area


Applicants must have:
•    Knowledge of Physics relevant to First Year Physics courses
•    Science or Engineering degree;
•    Preference will be given to applicants currently undertaking an Honours or PhD in Physics in Term 1, 2019 at UNSW Sydney.

Hours: 2-4 hours per week in Term 1, 2019. Please note that there are very few of these positions available in comparison to the lab demonstrator or teaching assistant for problem solving workshops positions.

Position (5)
Casual Teaching Assistants for Problem Solving Workshops in PHYS1121, PHYS1131, PHYS1221 & PHYS1231 courses


Applicants must have:
•    Completed PHYS1221, PHYS1231 or PHYS1241 with a good grade;
•    Preference will be given to applicants currently enrolled in Science or Engineering degree at UNSW Sydney, and those who worked as a peer tutor in problem solving workshops during 2018.

Hours: Up to 1-2 hours per week from 9:00 am -6:00 pm Mon-Friday, Weeks 1-10 in Term 1, 2019.

Selection for Positions (2), (3), (4), & (5):
If your qualifications and experience are suitable for the above positions, you will be invited to attend an interview with the relevant staff before the start of the Session.

Salaries for Positions (1), (2), (3), (4) & (5):
Casual hourly rates for lab demonstrators and teaching assistants will apply according to UNSW HR, (current rate is $50.64/hr; if the casual employee holds a doctoral qualification the rate is $59.98/hr).

Successful applicants will be required to complete necessary forms by attending the First Year Physics Office before 8 February 2019.
