School Colloquia Series - Matthew Bailes - The Transient Universe on Millisecond Universe
Tuesday 25th July 2017
Old Main Building - Room 149
Speaker: Matthew Bailes was the founding Director of the Swinburne Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing and involved in the discovery of Fast Radio Bursts. From 2017 he will be leading a new ARC Centre of Excellence for gravitational wave discovery (OzGrav).
Abstract: Recently two new windows have opened on the Universe, in the radio regime, advanced signal processing has led to the discovery of a new mysterious class of millisecond-duration events known as Fast Radio Bursts. These enigmatic objects appear to be coming from the distance universe but their origin remains a mystery. In 2015 gravitational waves were used for the first time to detect the merger of two black holes. In this talk I will talk about both of these new phenomena and the future of these fields, in particular how the new ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) will contribute to our understanding of Einstein's Universe.
