Modern and Thermal Physics for Teachers - PHYS9140
This is a entirely online course covering thermal and modern physics. Lecture material and tutorial problems will be presented online. This is the fourth (and final!) course in the graduate certificate for physics teachers. This course will cover thermal physics, and introduce quantum mechanics including the Schrodinger equation for simple situations, the standard model will be discussed and applications of quantum mechanics considered.
Assumed knowledge: Students need to be able to differentiate and integrate polynomials and write and solve simple differential equations to complete the course. A good understanding of HSC level extension 1 mathematics is recommended.
The assesment for the course is:
30% lab reports: You will carry out experiments using common high school lab equipment. You will adapt one of these for use with a class of high school students.
20% online quizzes: These wll ensure your remail up to date and can use some improtant concepts to answer questions.
50% written examination: to make sure you can answer questions about the material covered in the course. This can be invigilated at your school if you are unable to make it to UNSW.
Term 3: 16th September -14th December 2018 (10 weeks: You would need to enroll in PHYS9110 in Summer term 2018, PHYS9120 in Term 1 2018 and PHYS9130 in Term 2 2018 to be able to enroll in this.)
