Low dimensional semiconductor systems. Experimental investigations of the electronic properties of semiconductor structures in which the electrons are confined to 2, 1 and 0 dimensions; in particular, studies of these systems at low temperatures where quantum mechanical processes generate new phenomena.

High pressure studies. We use very high pressures, up to 60 thousand atmospheres to tune the crystal structure of solids at low temperatures in the search for new electronic processes.

Molecular electronics. There is currently intense interest in the fabrication and electronic properties of conductors and 'circuits' based on single molecules and self-assembled molecular structures. As conventional semiconductor microfabrication approaches physical limits to further scale reduction molecular electronics may provide an alternative.
