The asteroseismic revolution: New insights to stars, planets and the Galaxy

Tuesday, 30 August, 2016 -
15:00 to 16:00

I will give an overview of the dramatic progress in asteroseismology
sparked by recent space missions.  Asteroseismology, the 'sounding of
stellar interiors', has turned out to be particularly interesting for red
giant stars.  It has showed us a away to probe stellar core properties
in exquisite detail, and recently emerged results indicate
that the revolution is still not over.  Looking into the near and far
future, new missions from NASA and ESA will provide seismic measurements of
up to 1 million stars, from which new opportunities are arising to integrate
seismology into other branches of astrophysics, including galactic
archaeology.
